Hay prices

So I know that hay prices are pretty much outragious ( yes I know I spelled that wrong... ) but I went to the auction here in corunna, and I got a pile of 25 bales for 2.10 for first but it was really nice on the inside... a pile of 10 for 2.60 again first cutting. And then 32 bales for 3.10 of 2nd cutting that was really nice! There was only 4 bales that I will have to use here shortley sence they were damp. But the 1st cutting were sunfaded on the out side but really nice on the inside and no one bothered to check the inside beside me I don't know about everyone else but I am really picky about my hay... I roll it over and check into it. so for 67 bales it only cost 180! I was excited... cause I was expecting nothing cheaper than 4 bucks a bale.

Wow! I'm in Michigan, too, and haven't seen it under $3 a bale for quite some time. Of course, I haven't been to the local auction lately either, so it may be that low. You definitely have to have a good eye for quality hay at the auctions! They like to put the best ones on the front of the pile where most people check and the rest are crap. My usual hay guy is only about 4 miles away and right now his prices are $4 for small bales, $40 for a round.

At the last hay auction I went to is was going for no lower than 4 dollars. But this auction was not like the others I have been to the people there were mostly in their 60s or 70s and drove rusty pick up trucks and pretty much said NO WAY to hay over 3 dollars so you could say I am going there again. There was a few that were not to great but only like 4 or 5 of them.. Which is pretty good.. My friend got 42 bales for 4 bucks and thought it looked nice... ( from a different auction ) and got home and the whole thing was stalks... and her horses were not happy

So how big were the bales? I mean you got 67 bales so did you get a ton? If so $180 is pretty good! I paid $220 per ton this year as opposed to the $93 per ton last year.

They were about 4 feet long and about 2 feet high and 3 feet wide. They were nice and big

Oh good GOD what a deal you got.
It would cost my 1846.00 for 67 bales of Timothy hay. A ton would normal consist of 20 bales (110-115lbs) which would be about 560.00
For the smaller square bales (75-85 lbs) would be about 45 bales per ton.

Here we have mainly grass hays. The price has gone down since last year, we had a terrible drought.

This year it's still increadably high, but getting a little better. The legumes will cost ALOT more than the grass.
