Hay prices in CA

I'll be moving me and my horse to California in less then 6 months. I know hay with be considerably more then what I'm paying now in New Mexico. For the sake of planning a budget how much do you CAers pay for hay bales/hay per horse monthly?

It depends on where you buy feed, and how much the horses eat. Obviously a pony won't eat as much as a draft horse for example. Right now, alfalfa is running about 10 bucks a bale for the light alfalfa, and I think 13 for the heavy alfalfa. Grass hay isn't much cheaper at this point, though it did use to be the "cheap" alternative to feeding straight alfalfa.

Where in Cali are you moving to? These prices are based off of what the rate is in San Diego. If you are closer to the food source, from what I've heard, it gets a bit cheaper, but not much. If you can buy it directly from the grower, that tends to be relatively less expensive than buying it from a feed store who buys it from the grower.

Fairfeild CA :) Are these two strand or three strand bales? I'll be buying alfalfa and the horse in question eats 4 flakes a day. Thank you for the help! I appreciate it.
