Is he a horse or a pony?

Oakey is 14.8 hh. Would he be considered a pony or a horse?

Hands are measured in 4 inches, so 14.8 h would mean he's 16 h.

If he's 16 h he's definitely NOT a pony!

So, measure again and tell us how tall he really is, and we can give you a better answer.

Hm? I don't understand.

Let me add to what SR said.

When writing hands it is commonly done that after the decimal point is the inches associated. So 14.1h is 14 hands one inch. 14.3h is 14 hands three inches.

Tyler you posted the same time I did.

What SR is saying is that 14.8 hands means 14 hands plus 8 inches. 4" is a hand so 14 hands plus 8" = 16 hands.

Ah. Sorry. My bad...

He's 14.3 hh.

He's a horse. Over 14.2 is considered a horse, regardless of breed.

If he's wearing shoes all around, or just in front, there's a 1/2" allowance for shoes, so if wanted him to measure as a pony, you probably could.

Then he is not a pony, he is a horse.

14.2h is the cut off for a pony for most things (with some breed exceptions).

I think at dressage shows (someone correct me if I am wrong) it is anything under 14.3h is a pony. In the hunter type world it is under 14.2h.
