Helmets. Do you wear one? If not, why?

Helmets, who wears them, who does not?

I never wore helmets when I was growing up riding, started barrel racing in jr high and witnessed a friend take a nasty fall. Went that day and my mom paid 120$ for a Troxel helmet. (IMO Troxel is a cheap brand but at this time helmets were hard to find and expensive for even the cheaply made brands).

Getting back to working with the horses but even though my family/fellow riders are begging me to ride, I refuse to until my helmet gets here. Then if its the wrong size I'm still got getting on a horse until I have one that fits properly.

I have learned alot over the years, horses and in general. But I am fat and clumsy, almost finished with college and I have an Associates degree so far... I want to protect my head.

So if you don't wear a helmet, why?

I wear a helmet always.
My helmet is my most used part of my tack.

I came off a few years back and had a concussion for a year and half.

Let's talk helmets!

Helmet? Helmet.

Riding with helmets??

Poll-Do you wear a helmet when you ride?

Helmets - Do you wear one?

There are more, but I think you get the idea.

This is one of those hot-button topics, and no matter how civilized most people try to be, there are always going to be others who can't help but show their butts when they're spouting their opinions.

I moved to a new stable this week and the policy here is everyone wears a helmet, or you aint riding. At previous stables, you could sign a waiver if over 18 and ride without one.

I will be honest and say that, even as an adult, I have been lazy and not worn a helmet. Usually this was when I was in the small arena on a lesson horse and was feeling well, overly confident apparently. Luckily, I did not have to learn the hard way that This is not a good idea and now that my daughter (10YO) rides you won't catch me without one. Boy would she give me a safety lecture!

Plus now that I am the crispy old age of 37, I realize I am mortal - something I did not really appreciate when I was 14 riding around like a nut without a helmet...

I wear my helmet ALL the time... lately I haven't though... I need to have so many layers on my head to stay warm that my helmet won't fit, which honestly worries me when I am on the trail, anything can happen.

When I was growing up, and in my first lesson barn, safety was top priority, and since then it always has been in my mind... Even going into a stall with a horse to pick their feet or groom them, I wear a helmet... A lady that was well-known in my community was kicked in the head and instantly passed away while she was in her stall with her horse she had for years, she was just picking his feet. Many people started taking more pre-caution after that.

If I don't have my helmet on when I am riding I feel naked.

Since I can now read up on the other threads, an admin can rename this to "helmet inquiry" or remove it.

This is the helmet that I have ordered, it finally shipped yesterday. Thoughts?

I won't be doing any heavy riding, at the very most a bit of cantering down a trail or some figure 8's. No jumping, etc.

I have always wondered: If no one brings up something that was ever discussed before shouldn't we all just leave this board?

LOL - this is like the "strip clubs, yay or nay" topic on military wives sites - or "BF or FF" on parenting sites.
