I never wore one as a kid, but a few years ago I gave up my job, which included really good disability insurance, to freelance. I decided to protect my brain, since it is my most valuable asset.

I thought I would hate it, but I actually find it more comfortable than a ball cap. I also ride through the bush a lot, and it protects my head from tree branches.

It's stretched out quite a bit over the last 3.5 years, so I can now wear a thin toque under it this winter. I'll have to buy a new one this spring, I guess.

I don't think I have anything to prove anymore as a rider, so I don't care if I look a little dorky with my western saddle and English helmet. Would hate to end up with a bad concussion or much worse if it can be avoided.

Just my thoughts. Everyone has their own risk tolerance level, and I can respect that.

I absolutely hate helmets because they look stupid and don't feel that great, but I always wear one. Well, okay, not always, I went riding in Las Vegas recently and didn't wear one, but the horses were broke to death and we only walked... so... But other than that I always wear one, having fractured my skull twice in diving accidents, and a third time by being kicked in the head by my own horse!

Can you imagine?

Now THAT was embarrassing! Especially as I had just finished telling someone who was afraid of her that she was perfectly safe. But, she was a baby and she reared up when they began flapping their arms around and wacko, with a front hoof. I am told I that when I fell, unconscious to the ground, that I did it rather gracefully.

I don't wear a helmet, and I probably never will. I get claustrophobic with one on and pay attention to that instead of the horse im riding..I feel safer without out one because im much more aware of my mount and surroundings.

I've weighed out my risks and prefer to be more aware than to protect my head with some plastic. I have a better chance of staying on any antics if I'm not paying attention to a helmet. I encourage every new or young rider to wear one, even though I don't.

Depends:

On my 30ish year old quarter horse mare that plods along at a snails pace...not usually.

Now on my TB...heck yes I do! Along with a neck brace, inflatable vest, bubble wrap, metal armor.... Just kidding, well except for the helmet. He is actually a pretty good boy but you just never know when he's going to have one of "those" moments.

I'm not crazy about helmets. Especially in the summer-they can be hot and I usually get a headache. But I value my noggin, so I deal with it

Bottom line-to each their own! Not my business to preach.

I'd rather not wear one. However my none horsey husband worries unduly and I am yet to board at a barn where riding on their land does not require one. So I wear one.

They did, it wasn't popular so I think they stopped selling it. I think Troxel made one.

Ya' want to hear something odd on the helmet issue.....The last weekend before gun season I was camping with friends. None of us wear helmets but none of us judge others if they do. Well on one of the trails there was a lady who came riding up behind us and apologized for wearing a helmet! I turned around shocked and looked at her like....what? Why the hell are you apologizing? We aren't judging you, don't judge us type mentality. That was a first ever!

I personally try to wear a helmet whenever I ride. It may be uncomfortable, but I'm really accident prone and you can just guess what would end up happening to me XD

If people don't want to wear a helmet for whatever reason, it's their choice and people shouldn't jump down their throats about it. If they get hurt it'll just be a learning experience, should it not be fatal or debilitating...which I hope never happens to anybody here.

It's amusing when people project their own issues onto others.
