So my little mare, Tanner.... I hope to have her running barrels by next year's show season. (I had her run a few times this season, but in a borrowed saddle, and I tried to hold her back a little, since she hasn't really been conditioned.)
But my problem is her name! Tanner sounds like a boy's name (and everyone calls her a "him"), and her registered name, Tanner Hutch really is a guy (a motocross racer, to be exact). I just cringed when I heard them say "Tanner Hutch" over the intercom...
I'm not a huge fan of Magic's full name "Brennan's Magic" either, but I don't mind it as much.
There's some pictures of Tanner at my barn, here: http://www.horseforum.com/horses.php?horse=1429
My plan is to take her in most of the gymkhana classes, and run her as a second horse, alongside her daughter, Magic. It'd be fun if they had names that kind of went together.
I've only thought of two names myself:
- StarStruck (her headstall, at the moment, has star conchos on it, and her possible future saddle has big red stars on the skirt. But if that saddle doesn't work out.... then I probably won't like that name as much.)
- Melody (Magic's "theme song" is a song called "Magic Melody" by DHT... I have it on my cell phone, and I always blast it from my pocket just before, and sometimes during, a run. It pumps me up, and she seems to like it. Plus, I like the name Melody... it's pretty.)
My friend and I also have a running joke where we should enter our horses under names like "First Place", "that horse" and "the other horse", and things like that, just so we can get a giggle as they make the announcements.
"[rider] riding on That Horse is on deck, and [rider 2] riding That Other Horse is in the hole." or "Fifth place goes to First Place!"
But I think the joke would get old rather quickly if I did it on a regular basis.
