Hip higher than wither!

I have a couple yearlings for sale and one of them (a couple months ago) had his hip about 2 inches higher than his wither. Now he is about even. Anyways, someone wrote me a nasty email asking why his hip was higher than his wither. Isn't younger horses supposed to be a little higher because of growth? She just kind of got me thinking that I might be wrong...I've always seen younger horses with higher hips though.

I have always heard that they grow a little in the back, then even out in the front, grow in the back, then in the front and over and over until they reach their mature height. So, I think you are correct.

Yeah, young horses can look really wierd at times. My best friend reckons my 9 month old filly is a cut 'n' shut - ie her front end and back end come from different horses! She's about 2 inches different at the moment, front to back. I think half the fun is trying to work out how they'll look in the end!

Allflashypine, you are right about a horse's growth pattern. They typically grow in the rear then catch up. They'll do that several times as they age. If someone asked you about that, I would avoid selling to them since they apparently know little about babies.
