Horse + Flyspray = 😖

I have a young paint gelding who HATES flyspray. I have tried different types but no matter what he always runs circles around me. Any suggestions?

Is it just fly spray or does he hate having anything sprayed on him period? My young mini hates it but its the noise that she hates, I dont think its anything to do with whats in it. I filled an empty sprayer with water and any time I had her in hand would spray it at the ground (not in her direction) until she eventually got used to the noise and started to ignore it. Then I slowly started spraying it in the direction of her legs until she got used to that (she also hates the sensation of it landing on her). It took awhile and I will probably have to start over come summer time as she never really liked it, just tolerated it (barely!).
Otherwise you can spray it onto a brush or sponge and apply it that way but thats quite time consuming.
If its the smell he doesnt like you could try a home remedy? Water/white wine vinegar/small squeeze of washing up liquid/5 drops lavender oil/5 drops tea tree oil has worked well for me before but it still smells so might not be much help.
Also if he runs around you in circles you could try teaching him that as soon as he stops circling the spraying will stop and work from there.
Good luck!

Don't use spray. Use spray bottle filled with water and keep working with him. Start very slowly with the front legs and keep spraying till he stops running and calms down, then move to other areas.

Good idea! Because it's more the flyspray landing on him and the sound that he doesn't like. I'm certain it's not the smell!

I have the same problem with my gelding, I can spray his mane, his tail, his legs no problem. But when I get to his back? It takes about 10 minutes of running circles before he stands still. I've just assumed it doesn't feel nice to him, for some odd reason and after 2 summers with no progress I've come to except this has his one vice, and have a fly blanket for the worse days.
