Question Horse movies!

What are your favorite horse movies? I saw Secretariat earlier this year and cried through half of it (pathetic, I know), and I'm really looking forward to War Horse coming out later this year. I love the classic Black Stallion, too, although the TV series sucked. Does anyone have others they'd recommend? Hopefully some that are on DVD?

I love all the ones you mentioned, and Virginia's run. A low production movie, but the acting was decent and I loved the story. Another one I liked (a little cheesy but cute) was Moondance Alexander. There are other ones I know that are really good but I don't remember their names.

I've never heard of those movies, I'm going to look them up! But your username reminded me - isn't that a movie too? About the mustang who went to race against Arabs in the desert? That was good. I also saw an old Australian movie, the Man from Snowy River. It wasn't just about horses but the wild horses in it were beautiful.

I saw the Horse Whisperer movie but wasn't really crazy about it (I don't like how they didn't take Monty Robert's advice, and they knocked that horse down at the end).

Oh my I completely forgot about Hidalgo! That was the first horse movie I ever saw, and I loved it so bad, still do! The horse whisperer was good too, but I never saw the ending. I read the book though, so I know what happens.

I loved Virginia's Run.

I just went through my drawer and I have:
Virginia's Run
Moondance Alexander
Black Beauty
The Black Stallion
Running Free
The Horse in the Gray Flannel Suit
My Friend Flicka
The Story of Seabiscuit
National Velvet
International Velvet

And then I have a few seasons of Saddle Club.

I LOVE The Horse in the Gray Flannel Suit. It's so cute.

Oh ya Dreamer was gooood! And I preferred International velvet to National. I know a lot of people think otherwise, but I just liked how there was more real horse riding in the second one... and Christopher Plummer. ;)

I can't believe nobody named the old disney movie "Miracle of the White Stallions" !!! with Robert Taylor as Alois Podhajsky! based on the true story of the Lipizzaner Stallions.

"In WWII Austria, Col. Alois Podhajsky must protect his beloved Lipizzaner stallions and make sure that they are surrendered into the right hands. But Patton's something of a horse fancier and can help...if he sees the stallions perform! "

"Despite a rather slow start, this film is absolutely classic Disney and well worth the time spent. Everyone should know the story of the Lipizzaner stallions and Col. Podhajsky, the man who risked everything to save them."

(very beautiful!)
made me laugh and cry! it is a very slow beginning but anyone who loves Dressage will LOVE IT!

it is my all time favorite!

of course loved "Hidalgo" ! and the old fave "National Velvet"

I've never heard of the white stallion movie. I really enjoyed "A Horse for Danny" when I was a kid. I had to rent it from the video store everytime we went lol.

I so excited for War Horse too! I squealed when the trailer for it came on before Harry Potter. I'd REALLY love to see the stage production of it.

I grew up watching westerns with my grandpa, couldn't then and still can't stomach the majority of them but...I absolutely love "The Cowboys" with John Wayne.

Some other faves,
Wild Hearts Can't Be Broken,
Racing Stripes - good family flick,
The Man From Snowy River and Lonesome Dove.

An oldie but a goodie that hasn't yet been mentioned was Danny, put out in 1977. Danny (1977) - IMDb

Also "The Winter Stallion" (also sometimes listed as "the Christmas Stallion" and "The Silver Brumby".) You can actually watch it online here. The Silver Brumby Full Movie (The Winter Stallion) - IMDb
