Horse Registration

Hello! I am quite new to this site, I think I am posting in the correct board but I'm not entirely sure so please let me know!

My question is this, I bought a gelding, Charlie, this past July and he was grade however I was told he could've been registered. Charlie never got registered because the couple who had him got a divorce and the guy I bought him from never got him registered because his ex-wife took the papers, or something along those lines. I'm wondering if I find out his dam and sire's registered names, can I get him registered with just that? I figure I'll have to send a hair sample in for proof of DNA.

Also my next question, I think the guy I bought him from said he was quarter horse however he defiantly has paint in him. He has a bald face and some white flecks on his stomach. I was told he could've been registered but they never did, so I am assuming both parents were registered or am I incorrect? For a horse to be registered does only one parent need to be registered?

I've heard multiple things about registration so I thought I would ask!

In both AQHA and APHA both parents have to registered and you have to have all the paperwork in order.

You can go to each registries site and read all the rules or even call them and ask them to send you a rule book.
