So I have been becoming interested in horses teeth and trying to figure out the ages from their teeth. However I am still not very good, I'm just wondering if anyone has any favorite sites they go to for resources for finding out age estimates based on teeth?
Also, anyone want to guess how old my gelding is? He wouldn't let me get very many pictures of his teeth. I know how old he is, but can you guys guess?
And because who wouldn't want to see who those gorgeous teeth belong to..
If he was 4 the corner teeth would just be coming in. He has a full set of adult teeth all in wear so that puts him at least 5
From those pictures and it isn't easy to take pictures on your own, it cannot be assessed as you cannot see the tables of the teeth and they are the tell tale for assessing once a full mouth has arrived.
I'll try to get better pictures tomorrow when I head to the barn!
When I first started looking at him I was told he was 6, and then the previous owners realized he was 8. So I was just wondering what you guys thought.
I would be surprised at 8 but I had a gelding that always mouthed younger than he was so it happens.
I put him at 4 because it looked like his gums were still swollen around those corner incisors like they were recent additions but I'm certainly not even close to being an expert at it.
They do not loose their corner teeth until they are 4 1/2 and these come into wear around 5 so there is no way he is four regardless of thinking his gums were swollen.
I haven't been able to get any better pictures, there hasn't been anyone out to help me! Hopefully sometime today I can take some! Do I just need the front and the sides?
I was thinking closer to the 8 in age but saw you had said 6-8? Is he not registered so you know for sure?
And the pictures showing the teeth, don't look like they match the bald faced horse either, had he been cleaned up for "professional photos" and the teeth pictures were taken when he had been grubbing around in the dirt?
My guess would be at least 10, possibly 12. ie. teeth appear longer than they are wide and it looks like he has a galvayne's groove on the corner tooth.
@palomine I was told he could have been registered since both his parents were registered but when the guy I bought him from got divorced, somehow the ex-wife got all the paperwork for Charlie and Greg didn't want to go through the hassle of contacting his ex, so he sold him as grade.
It's defiantly the right teeth for the bald faced horse since I took them. He had eaten his breakfast and then we rode and then I took the pictures, so I'm not sure what you mean?
also to age a horse, you need to look at both sides of the mouth. Pooky lied, his right side would have aged him at 12 and his left side at 8-9 . He was in fact 11, which was fact from his papers and since I had owned him since he was 4 months old.
