Horses Age....

This just randomly popped in my head since it is the beginning of a new year. When does YOUR horses age change? Do you change by the actual month or do you go by the 1st of the year?

We have always gone by the January 1st....for Example: JJ was 7 before the first (born in May 05), and on the first he is now 8 (even though he was a May foal).

So when does your horses age change?

I've never heard of that, lol! I guess if you don't know your horses actual DOB that's a good way to do it.

Turly's changes on his birthday, Feb.16th He will be 21!

Racehorse people all go by January 1st, so 'officially' my JJ is 9 y/o now. He won't actually be 9 until April.

Casper was also born in April and the AHA goes by actual date of birth, so he won't be 15 until then.

Mack was born in May, and as another Arabian, he won't be considered 27 until his actual birth month.

My Arabs all age on their birthday's. No exotic rule change for them.

My youngest will be born this year, and my oldest will be 25 in March. Or April. I lost count. LOL

"officially", by JC regs, Aero (Lady Brave Heart) was 7 on New Years Day. However, her real birthday is in April. Katy gives her two birthdays since it's double the excuse to buy more horse stuff.
Yahzi is a grade with no known history - so I have no idea about her, so we just use the day we brought her home as her "birthday" (because all our animals get to have a birthday, lol)

My horse goes by her birthday. Which really isn't far because her birthday is January 21st. Lol.

But, yes, many people's horses go by the 1st of January. Especially racers.

The Arabians that I have owned all aged on their actual birthday. The hubby's QH is technically supposed to age on Jan. 1st, but I told DH since he isn't shown, raced, or anything else his bday will be his bday, I don't care what AQHA says.

January 1st, we have Quarter Horses and age them all by the 1st like AQHA says. So Link is now 6 and Kid is 3.
