Question How can you tell if your horse loves you?

My horse Day Star is very shy. When I first got her she wouldn't let anyone near her. But now I'm basically the only one ably to ride her because everyone else is to scared. Now Day Star greets me when I go to see her, she follows me, licks me and she even has protected me a couple times. What other signs do horses show that they love you?

Horses don't love in the traditional sense that we associate with people--love is very much a human emotion. They form bonds based on convenience and they trust and respect people that work with them, but they don't love us like we love them.

Yep exactly. We tend to give horses humanised emotions when they do not actually think and relate to others in the same way.
If you want to think your horse loves you to make yourself feel good then go right ahead ;)
But the horse simply respects you as a leader and enjoys your company.

Still a horse that enjoys your company can still probably fall under the category based on how you classify it but it is still totally different then how we view it. Still I like to think that they can regardless.

What I was trying to say was how do they show that they see you as their friend and that they could rely on you.

Lots of ways - depends on the horse. In general terms, some horses will behave for some people and not others, they'll listen, in a scary situation they will sometimes keep it together until you help, or maybe they freak out but you can help them calm down, they'll go where you point even though they may not like it. Will all horses do that? Maybe no. But those are things you can look for.

For example, when I took my horse to a bombproofing clinic once we had to see who could walk through two rows of fire. My horse didn't like it and certainly didn't want to, but he did it anyway when I asked. Then he did it a few more times until he did it at the speed I asked for.

Licking is not something that should be allowed.

As far as telling? I don't know that they love in sense you seem to be interested in. Some may, but I don't think they all do.

Horses make me a better person.

I'm not trying to be rude but where did you get that info from?! Because when a horse licks you that means that they trust you.
