How do I search for a horse brand?

My friend recently got a 25yr old horse and as his coat has shed we noticed he has a brand. I think I've heard that you can search some sort of registry and find out where that brand is from...we thought it would be cool to find out where he came from.
Any suggestions?
Thanks! :)

Where is the brand and what does it look like? If it is on his flank or shoulder this is often a studmark and will relate to stud of origin. It could also refer to his breeding. However, if it is on his back (roughly where saddle would go) and is I think a combination of 4 numbers then this would be a freeze mark. How to find out the above would very much depend on the country you live in; I am only knowledgable on the UK.

The brand is on his looks like a capital "L" and on the top part of the L it has 2 lines coming to a point at an agle to make an arrow...
