    Like Xela said, blame it on college. ;) Colleges LOVE past experience. Plus, there's always scholarships. If your riding goes downhill, how are you going to get a scholarship for it?
    I can understand if your dad is apprehensive about it, though. 60-80 minutes extra driving multiple times a week is hard. My dad complains about me having to go TEN minutes, and he doesn't even drive me.

    I would offer to pay off half of gas with what you earn. Will you be making money, or is it just an intern/learn in exchange for work?

    The cost of gas would be an issue for me personally, but we have a young girl at my barn training horses for someone (I assume she's getting a little money out of it, but still) her parents drive her and drop her off many times per week. - I'm not really sure how far away they live, but I thought I saw out of state plates on their car, so at least 40+ minutes. - Maybe you'll get lucky.

    Anyway! Like other people said, try to offer chores/work in exchange. And figure out/make arguments as to how it will "help" you in the future (college, etc.)
