How much do you spend on horses?

Ha! Just a fun thread, hopefully to see how sensible or obsessed we all are!
How much of your income, in percentage or ratio, do you spend on your horse/s? Is it too much? Just enough?
Who thinks they have the ratio just right? And what is that number??

I'll start. I have four equines, and up until now, its been, at most, a third of my income monthly. Pretty steep!!
But it gets worse! From next month, I am moving them to a new barn, so then its almost half of my cash on the horses alone... So I have to sell one or two... :(

Who is doing better than me? ...And who is doing worse? :p

Every month majority of my first check goes to board, the rest all to bills, the second check of the month goes to bills, and what I have left goes to gas to get to my horse, or spending money to get things for my horse. Its pretty bad.....if its not one thing its another!! Hehe

Gross income? Or after fixed expenses? I spend about 8% of my gross income but after all my fixed expenses about 50% of my spendable money is on my horse and that includes board.

Ha! Way better than me! I admit, its gross income, after tax of course.
At least I don't have that many fixed expenses at this point in my life.

Well don't know if it's better or worse, but I have two horses, one stud colt (soon to gelded) and one gelding. As of now I get a GREAT deal on board. I board at a friend's farm, I'm the only boarder and pay $150 per month for BOTH. I supply hay when needed and I clean up / maintain the fences / pasture and barn when I need too. It's nothing special, just a barn, run and one pasture. No arenas, but trails and areas to ride in and I also get to ride in the indoor and use the round pen down the road.

Lately I've become quite a tack hoarder though and that's been eating up my extra fun cash! It's horrible... anytime I get that extra money I've been finding cute tack and finding tack for my colt. He's one right now.

So, money wise. I'd say I've been spending quite a lot, BUT I do put in A LOT of work to save money so it's not as bad as it could be! Hay prices are high here, plus I have shots coming up, coggins, and gelding for little Rocky. That will be quite the bill, but I have my "horsey account" it will be coming from. I find that even having one or two horses it's nice to have an account for them! I put $50 to $100 in every check and then vet bills and other horse stuff comes from there.

It gets bad right?! I feel as if I need to lie to people about how much I actually spend, just so they don't think I'm absolutely crazy.
Worth it? Yup.

In a month, I spend $150 for my half lease plus $180 for weekly lessons (it used to be twice a week, but now that I can ride more through my lease I cut it down to once a week). So that's $330 directly put to riding/horses a month. It's a good 1/5th of my paycheck which honestly isn't bad at all considering what other people pay for their horse obsession!

Now to figure out how to stop wasting so much money elsewhere so I can save for a horse of my own. Curse being a compulsive buyer!

Oh dear, ha ha!

When people hear I have multiple horses, nevermind just one, they usually wince and ask me how much I spend. I just say something like 'it comes to a fair bit', avoid eye contact, and walk away. And try not think about it any further.

Lol I know how that goes, my man knows for the most part how much I spend but he thinks little cute things they surely need are silly. XP Others though, especially "non-horsey" people are surprised they cost so much! It just seems to astound most people, especially lately those really looking into getting their own horse. I will sit down and write it out for them and you should see their faces!
