how to raise money for cancer research

so I am looking into doing a trail ride for both breast cancer and prostate(sp) cancer. The rides are usually held in september, october, and november and range in distances. The only thing in common is you need to make a donation. The lowest one is $100 and the high of $300. You usually can join teams which I might for one ride. And they are going to try and raise 500 each person.

I am all for donating money but I don't have that much extra to donate. So I was thinking of raising the money. I can always raise more than needed and donate that as well.

But how do you go about getting donations. I feel weird asking people but I know the best sources are from work and putting up signs at different places.

Any ideas on how I should approach this.

Thanks
