The past few days I have been pretty bummed from the sale of my favorite horse my instructor owned, Maggie. She was sold right after our trail ride on Saturday. Now that Maggie was gone, Annie was the only broke horse at the barn, meaning my riding was indefinately done until my instructor got another horse next spring.
Earlier this afternoon I got a call from my instructors girlfriend, K, asking me if I could come out to the barn for 15-20 minutes. I said I would be out there in a few minutes. As I drove out to the barn, something just didn't add up. K nor my instructor wouldn't call me if they didn't have a reason; but why wouldn't she tell me?
I get out to the barn and K is standing in front of the barn. She lead me to the back pasture, told me to cover my eyes, and look around the corner of the barn.
I thought what I saw was a mirage. Out in the pasture was a gorgeous solid black quarter horse gelding. After several years of waiting and wishing, K had gotten her first horse.
And my surprise.....I can ride him as Maggies replacement.:-o
I'm so exctied to get to know Monty. He is a 14 year old retired WP and halter horse. Yesterday, my instructor rode him around cattle (probably Monty's first time around them) and he did amazing. He probably has the potential to do lower level team penning. Both K and my instructor rode Monty bareback with no problem. He is a naturally slow gaited horse and he will keep a consistant smooth speed no matter what he is doing. He will do barrels, poles, trail, you name it.
Monty's only flaw is: He is majorly overweight. He needs to lose about 250 pounds.
I am sooo excited!!! Monty is one of the best looking horses (conformation wise, not size wise:wink I have ever seen in person. And to tell you the truth, I'm a little jealous of K. I can't wait to get the pounds off of him and start riding him.
I hope to get pictures somtime this weekend.
