I still don't understand how this happened....

Sooooooooooo.............I am going to the barn as usual today, I skipped out yesterday because I couldnt get away from work. Well, I show up and sure enough here comes the barn owner. He says that he has something to tell me. Well apparently when he turned Thunder out yesterday in the arena, when he came back to bring him to his stall, Thunder was laying on the ground with his head caught in a chain by the gait where he he has other stalls. He said that he saw him and freaked out because he wasnt moving and he thought he was dead! I guess Thunder had somehow stuck his head into the chain and instead of freaking out like most horses, he just laid down and sat there until someone came to help him. The BO ran and was scared out of his mind to get the bolt cutters to cut the chain. I understand this is hard to picture, it is for me too. After he cut him loose, he was a bit shaken up, but ok. The BO didnt call me because he said that Thunder was fine. He said that I have one smart horse, because rarely do they just lay down like that if they have their head caught up in something. I feel pretty sad for my little man at the moment, but I really can't figure out how he got tangled up in such a small section of chain. Here's a pic of his owie, it's directly below his ear, kind of where the halter would go.

Glad he is okay! He seems to be level headed enough to have sense when trapped - I think that is a really good trait. :)

Jeeze silly duffa Thank god hes ok and has a sensable enough mind to have not freaked out. I have heard similar stories with less desirable results.

His ouchie doesnt look to bad either. Poor fella.

thanks guys! it's his first boo boo since ive had him lol. i think the situation he was in was more scary than the actual scrape lol.

I'm very glad your horse is okay!!

I read your other thread about considering moving to another barn, and honestly this would be the last straw for me. I would've wanted to know if my horse was in such a traumatic accident whether or not the BO felt the horse was uninjured. I feel as if the horse owner has a right to decide whether or not he or she wants to get the vet out to check on his or her horse.

But, perhaps my opinion is skewed because I have not had a lot of experience boarding horses (I have kept them on my own family's property except a short period of a few months where I boarded a new horse). I really have no idea as to what is "normal procedure" in boarding situations.

Nickelodeon- I was kind of thinking the same thing. He did tell me thought which is good, but I would have asked about the scrape anyways. Well, I am in the process of searching for a new barn anyways with better service and amenities. I appreciate your opinion! Thanks so much for pointing that out.
