You know that woman's intuition thing? That feeling we get in a visually good situation that feels just wrong.

I am guessing this is something similar. Probably just being very overprotective of his baby, which is perfectly reasonable, and he very well might have a "bad feeling" over the pony, the owner, or just something off about the situation. I'd talk it over with him to figure out what exactly is wrong, and then keep going.

Some more ammo for you, ponies generally are more hardy and live longer than horses, so you could have(with proper care) ten good using years out of a twenty year old pony, just for an example. ;)

I am terribly fond of one eyed horses. I am in love with this Spotted Walker stud who, in an accident involving barbed wire, is missing his entire right eye. But he is beautiful, and I wait for the day when I can maybe own one of his sons (or him, in my wildest dreams lol).

A good horse is a good horse, no matter what their defects or faults may be.

Think of it not as a failure but as a success in how not to do it.

Don't look in a horses mouth for a gift.
