Introducing/Housing a New Horse

Okay, so I have officially decided to bring Kubie, the 25 year old appaloosa gelding home soon (possibly this weekend already!). I am trying to decide where to put which horses, to try to lessen the stress of this whole deal.

I have a 3/4 acre dry lot where my current horses are housed. Since the grass hasn't grown much yet, they haven't been out on the 1 acre pasture yet. I don't want to toss Kubie in with them right away, as I have seen way too many accidents happen when horses are introduced this way. I'd like a fence to separate him from the others for the first few days, then go from there.

As you can see from my crude diagram, I have my round pen in the dry lot. How much sense would it make to put Kubie in there? The panels are not electrified. Or should I move the round pen outside of the dry lot? Any suggestions?

hmmm I would put the round pen on the inside of the pen but make one side of it to the fence to if they are picking on him through the fence he has somehwere to stand. :)

If there are no horses in heaven... im not going.

Like, create an area inside the dry lot using the round pen?

I just put them out together and have never had an issue - HOWEVER, we have enough space. Each paddock we use is probably between 8-10 acres.

I wouldn't do the same in paddocks as small as yours. Injuries and accidents happen when they don't have room to get away from a bully.

He should be finein the round pen inside the paddock - The others will probably get bored of him after an hour or two anyway!

Thanks for the advice! I think I'll keep Kubie in the round pen inside my paddock/dry lot for the first day or two. He is coming home Monday night--I'm so excited!
