I will be making my second trip to Chincoteague island in the next couple weeks, and I am VERY excited! I have already planned lots of beach time, a lesson at the Pony Centre, and a trail ride at Queen Hive Farm.
I was wondering if anybody had been before, and what you recommend doing? I'll be there for at least three days, and I'll also have someone who isn't as horse-enthused as I am, so any and all recommendations are welcome!
Bring some serious bug spray too. The mosquitoes are vicious.
We thought Ledo's pizza in Chincoteague was pretty decent at the time but it isn't rated so great online. My husband reminds me we were cold, tired and very hungry plus we're not foodies so you might find better food - but it tasted good to us.
I love the ponies...have a great time!
Off topic: I have recently met someone named Stormy and I keep forgetting if her name is Misty or Stormy thanks to Marguerite Henry.
@gottatrot You know I think I remember something about the bugs being biters. Thank you for the reminder! And I can barely keep names straight in the first place, that would really stump me! Lol @Avna That is a wonderful point! I hardly ever use enough sunscreen, and with how I'm planning on soaking up some beach time, I'm going to need that reminder!
And no worries @JCnGrace, I'm a huge photography buff, so there will be PLENTY of photos!!
@Cocoa Thank you SO much for your advice!! That's a huge help I am extremely excited. I've been there once before, but I was younger and didn't have "control" of the vacation. This will be my first time going as an adult, and I'm very very excited to just enjoy the island on my terms. It's so cute and beautiful. I do remember bicycling around the island when I went, and that really is just a fun, relaxing time. The houses there are so beautiful in themselves.
Do you have links, phone numbers, or company titles for the lighthouse tour and kayaking?? I would love them!
And no worries everyone, I will be posting tons of pictures! Most likely to the "pictures" forum, but I'll post a link to it here
Chincoteague/Assateague is one of my favorite spots in the world. Friendly people, horse stuff everywhere! Plus the island is very walkable and friendly to bikes since the island-wide speed limit is 30 MPH, so no need to take your car everywhere if you don't want to. There are lots of places to rent bikes, mopeds, etc if you want.
The pontoon tours to see the wildlife and ponies are definitely worth it, as well as kayaking and other outdoor activities like the lighthouse tour! I also love the nature centers and geocaching on the island.
Mr. Whippy is a great place for ice cream, and if you like seafood and want to do at least one "nice" dinner while you are there, Bill's Seafood Restaurant is REALLY good. Ledo pizza is okay, but in my opinion it's hard to make a truly BAD pizza.
I always loved visiting the Brant and also Pony Tails Taffy to look at all the gifts and things for sale (I love poking through gift shops, that and tack shops/thrift stores are my big weaknesses).
Don't forget to visit the Misty statue on the main street
Just wanted to add that Virginia is VERY strict about allowing the ponies to roam, and generally keeps them in their designated areas. The MD side is where they roam all over the beach and through the national seashore. Don't try to feed or pet any ponies you do see, since they are very much wild and can bite/kick. Feeding them is also prohibited by law and they are not shy about handing out fines or citations.
@Mulefeather Your insight is making me that much more excited to return I'm also a shop-y type person, so I'm very excited to buzz through them! The Island Creamery was a great spot for ice cream that I found when I was there as well, so I'll have to hit up both to do taste testing
Would LOVE a link for the kayaks! That sounds so amazing. I'm going to get around to reserving our pontoon ride here soon. @3rdTimestheCharm Thank you SO SO much for the pictures!! We love them! Wow guys, I'm so excited to go again lol.
