For millennia **** sapiens has depended on members of the equine family to do the heavy work. Today we largely depend on dead dinosaurs, to the point where we tend to forget our almost symbiotic relationship with Mr. Horse.
But even in modern English, many common phrases still reflect our long relationship. For instance, have you ever been "saddled" with some body elses work? Have you refused to "stand" for verbal abuse? Have you ever wished the boss would "get off your back"?
I can think of several more examples right offhand; bet you can too. Wanna see how many examples we can come up with? I know you are just "chomping at the bit" waiting to post your faves :-D
Walking to get somewhere is "hoofing it". Tall young ladies are sometimes referred to as having "coltish" legs. Sometimes we've all "put the cart before the horse" & "shut the barn door after the horse is gone".
Anyone up for a game of horse shoes ? Do you like bottled beer or draft ?
