I fractured my foot so I havent ridden since August 7th. I went out and rode my awkward, long backed, still a little on the green side mare....Ive been doing some VERY beginner lessons on her the past month and a half and have done some longing, but really its been like 2x a week getting worked and that's it. I was expecting her to be her typical awkward unbalanced self at the canter but boy was I wrong! I've never had her feel so good! I've tried to work on some collection with her in the past to get her to engage her back end more so she's more balanced. Typically she can't even continue on at the canter unless she flattens out and really stretches through because her back end will start doing lord knows what and then shell break to the trot. Well I asked for the canter and it was a wonderful lifted rocking horse canter and my jaw DROPPED!!! I thought it was a fluke, sometimes shell give me good collection and its difficult so she then gets mad and starts bucking if I continue pushing her so I brought her back to a trot and figured id ask again before she got mad at me. Asked for the canter again, and again it was so lifted and smooth and dare I say....collected?! So I continued on, and actually had to squeeze her every few steps (this horse is a speed demon, usually just thinking go and your going!!!). Again I still figured it was a fluke and shed loosen up and flatten out shortly, which never happened, so I took her down and galloped her full speed to get the "kink" out lol. (its just that odd haha). And after galloping I trotted a little more, then let her free walk for awhile, then back to the canter for jumping and sure enough she went back to this new collected canter! Don't get me wrong, I LOVED it, its just something that I've been working towards for a year now and ellusive balanced canter has only showed its head a few times for very short periods! I was AMAZED beyond belief!!! Now my typical Sophie came back out with a jump in front of her, but she stayed collected until two strides out, then really loosen and stretched out before take off, but then came back after and let me pick spots down lines. I even did a 5 stride in a 4 stride line! Boy did I enjoy that ride :) I hope it stays and wasnt a one day fluke! But atleast now I know she has the ability to get well balanced and maintain it :) right as I was having doubts about her being my show pony she pulls it out and if she continues on this path shell definitely be my forever horse!!!! Im so ecstatic! Im taking her to a show Saturday hope she does this canter there too! Its just a little local show to get her out there a bit, just for experience, but if she rides this well tomorrow then we might actually come home with some ribbons at a.......gasp.....HUNTER show...with my made for eventing mare haha.
Small video (I wanted to have a reminder of this wonderful canter because who knows when Ill see it again, hopefully soon though!!) If only I hadnt hit her in the back while reining her back in between the fences it would have been so much better! (Keep in mind, I have a fractured foot and havent ridden for a month and a half but I just couldnt take it anymore!!) maybe the time off did us both good though lol
