Wasn't that long ago actually! The picture is still sort of embarrassing to me, though. A lot can change in a few years.
Very first horse (technically pony) that I rode without help. I think I was 9? :) It was at a camp that I fell in love with after that first week. They started you at bareback (even through rollbacks/extended loping/posting trot/two-point) until your seat developed enough before allowing you into a saddle (also a way to get around buying 75+ saddles). I didn't ride in a saddle until I was 14, but my seat is rock solid.
And just to save face a little, here I am, 8 years later at the same camp, and a much better rider than before. (Photo taken today, actually)
There's a small, informal show at the end of the week to showcase what the campers learned to their parents, and the "advanced" riders (in saddles) do a Grand Entry with flags representing all the international councilors they bring in (I am carrying the English flag). Mr Grumpypants there got a little excited because of the crowd and didn't want to control his lope.
Sadly my brother took possession of most of ours when dad died but I have found a few to scan and - they don't come much worse than these!
One is with the first foal that was actually my very own when I was about 14 - I am the tallest girl, the shot was taken from the ground and made me look like I had a turnip head. My mother had a waste not want not attitude so I was forced to wear her sisters hand me down old fashioned jodhs - at least 15 years out of date. The smaller girl was a neighbours daughter who used to ride my outgrown pony. The boots she is wearing were allegedly once worn by the jockey Lester Piggot and my Grandad picked them up at the racing yard when he left them behind.
The other pic is of me on the same mare when I broke her the summer after the foal was weaned. THis was the first time I ever sat on her - no hat and goodness only knows what I had on my legs or feet. I think I must have had a total rebellion from the previous pic
I think you look cool! Almost like a Beatle, perhaps. (Yes, I know you're a girl, but still, it's that -look-!) And I honestly do think that's awesome. I just looked like an utter doofus with huge ears when I was a kid. XD But I guess that's good for making people in this thread laugh?
My scanner isn't working, so here are some pictures of old Polaroids I took with my crappy phone camera. These were from the little competition thing they had at the end of summer camp at this barn I rode at when I was younger. Posing for a picture was obligatory. @___@;; The only good thing about these pictures is Luna...I miss her, I wish I could ride her again. :[ After a while, I rode her for every lesson, we got on very well. She was lovely to ride.
