Kola got beaten up by 5 other horses.

My 18ish grade Paint, Kola, is stalled during day due to photosensitivity, so he can't be out on grass, or in sunlight, and only gets out overnight, in dry lot. My horses have been with the same people for almost 4 years, and while the couple got divorced, the woman was the one I moved horses with, as she has horses, and there was going to be place to keep Kola up in winter months, and out of sun, this move happened last Sept.

There was about 2 acres or less fenced off, that was for Kola to go out in overnight. The wife of the renters she has there in house at this point said she would feed/med Kola, so I didn't have to drive out every day. That has worked well for most part.

I go out in AM and put Kola in, unless cloudy. She lets him out PM.

Monday before last, the land owner, tells me her mother had hooked her up to ride a horse for someone for 10 days, and she was going to put it in Kola's area. Which meant Kola couldn't get any exercise for his bad leg, (arthritis) and we talked about letting him out into square pen, which opens up on all sides, but is gated to keep horses in different pastures, or Kola's lot, or to barn where Kola has stall. (I had a bad feeling about this, and should have listened)

Horse came the 7th, I didn't see it, as show string was gone, and working nonstop, barn got home last Sat, Sun I was resting, and phone rang, it was the renter's wife, she NEVER calls me, always texts.

The other horses, of which there are 6, 2 are mine, other 4 are land owners, had gotten into stall with Kola, and beat him up, to the point he had crashed through gate, which is HUGE, getting it off of hinges, and torn through cattle chute of wood, through nails and boards.

He is in small area where hay and feed is and meds, torn up, puncture wound in point of shoulder/neck area that is deep as heck, scratched all over, hair torn off, bite marks, kick marks, and bleeding and swollen.

Landowner is on way out, and I throw clothes on and fly out there. My trailer is at paint shop, truck is at shop too, so am going to have to borrow a trailer/truck. Call my boss and ask if can borrow one if need to.

Get there and it is obvious Kola needs vet attention, so go back to barn 20 miles away, pick up truck/trailer and go 20 miles back to get Kola, and then backtrack the 20 to drive to vets, which is 60 miles away from where Kola is.

Kola stayed there until Thursday. He is at WP barn I work at now, in stall and being tended to. Pus in wound, am doing water therapy, plus he is on antibiotic too, top dressing on feed, which he doesn't want to eat really good, but is getting most of it.

I imagine vet bill will be 500 dollars or so, emergency vet calls cost money. He has scrapes all over him, off stifle/gaskin was swollen bad, cuts on off knee, off fetlock, bites/blood on nose, patch above right eye where hair was scraped off. Nails got him on off shoulder/neck and looks like mountain lion clawed him but those aren't deep.

This has really upset me. This horse has never ever been mean, or been a problem, and for him to get hurt just makes me mad enough to shoot someone.

Landowner said other horses went through 2 gates to get in Kola's stall. Seriously I doubt it. I figure she forgot to latch/tie gates shut, and when renter's wife went and turned Kola out for night, she didn't know to check it, heck, I wouldn't have either, as in 10 months horses NEVER got through gate, so why would they now?

I said "this never would have happened if that other horse hadn't been brought here" and that is the truth. THAT horse should have been shut up in small pen, not Kola.

I went back and moved Baby Huey and Bonanza too, and boss and I went and got my 60' round pen and my other things. I have 100 bales of hay there to get, but will have to wait, although we did get 17 bales yesterday and took to barn.

Just mad that Kola got hurt, and while I realize it could have been much much worse, it should not have happened at all. Reason I moved horses with her, was it was a closed herd, no new horses coming in, so less chance of problems.

Wasn't I a fool?

Cross your fingers that Kola's wound heals well please.

I just hate this happened.

Wow. First, I am sorry Kola go hurt. Its no fun to tend to an injured horse and that sounds pretty traumatic. The good thing is that you got him vet care and he is antibiotics. I am confused as to if you are keeping Kola at this location or moving him?
I would also say, that accidents happen and this may have just been that. I know thats a not cool idea particularly when its your horse that is hurt. If you keep him at the location, I would suggest checking gates and seeing if there is a way to make sure there are more barriers between Kola and the herd. Its clear that the group of them are not messing around. The property owner should be okay with that idea given how badly your horse was injured.

I hope he heals completely.. what a nightmare :( It hurts especially since he is such a sweetie and doesn't deserve to be beat up and chased off.

I moved all of the horses to the WP barn I work at, so he is where he can be watched now.

He is just such a good fellow.

I will get pictures up when I figure out how to.
