Leasing/Owning Questions.

If I ever wanted to lease a horse in the future... what should I know about owning a horse?

What are the expenses?
How do different leases work? How does a free lease work? Is it more expensive than a half lease?
What do I need to know about caring for a horse?

If I make enough money this year I am going to seriously consider finding a horse to lease. I have been looking on craig's list and there are about 4 or 5 free leases out there right now. But I don't know what other expenses would be like, or even what having a horse is like.

I don't have time to answer each question individually right now, but do you take lessons at a barn at the moment? I don't know if your barn offers horses for lease, but I think that would be best for you. They'll help you along the way with any questions and complications you may have, you'll be leasing a horse you already know, and if you ever need to drop the lease for whatever reason, you know the horse will be in good hands.

It's really all about experience. Spend as much time around them, and you'll slowly pick up on what it means to care for a horse. There's simply too many aspects to cover here.

I am currently leasing a horse. As for I do not have the money right now to actually OWN a horse.

I will answer all youre questions as good as I can

What are the expenses?
Each lease is different, and some leases you may have to pay board fees, vet, farrier, ect. Others (like mine) the actually owner has to pay all of that. It could also depend if you are keeping the horse at a different barn then the owner of the horse has it at.

How do different leases work? How does a free lease work? Is it more expensive than a half lease?
There are 3 different leases that I am aware of - Full lease, Half lease, and Free lease.
Full lease can mean a few different things, any where from YOU pay everything for the horse (board, feed, vet, farrier ect.) And you can ride whenever you want, however many days a week. OR You dont have to pay any of the horses expenses, (board, feed, vet, farrier ect), you just get to ride whenever you want, how ever many days a week you want.
Half lease can mean, you pay half of all the bills, (board, feed, vet, ect) And can only ride a limited amout each week. OR you just pay half of everything, and still get to ride anytime you want / however many days a week you want to, and vise versa.
Free lease is just that. You pay nothing for the horse, but either get to ride how ever many days you want, or a limited amout.
I would imagine that a free lease would not be more expensive then a half lease.

What do I need to know about caring for a horse?
You should know most of the basics about horse care. And how to properly ride / groom / tack up / feed / care ect. But while leasing a horse you will also learn a lot. As I have!

Monthly leasing fees can range anywhere from FREE to about 400 a month JUST for the lease itself. That does not include board, vet, feed, farrier, ect.

I hope I helped out some. Let me know if you have any other questions!! Or if something isnt clear enough.

For some reason I was under the impression that a free lease meant nyou do not pay a lease fee, but you pay for the horses expenses...

But that is the same as a full lease I suppose.
This is all very confusing. haha

So, with something like a free lease, you basically get to ride whenever you want for free? You don't pay an amount for the horse? god how could it get any better than that?

Is that not the same as

or are you saying that you don't pay expenses but you do pay a fee? --- in that situation

I know different titles than Jillyann, to me a Free Lease means you pay all the fees for the horse and can take them to your barn, but you pay nothing to the owner. A half lease means the horse stays, and you pay a set amount and ride a set amount of times. A Full Lease means that you can ride whenever you want and you work out whatever payment with the owner.

They are all different and negotiable with the owner, and none of the lease titles are set in stone.

For me, I lease a horse. Technically, it is a half lease, because I pay half of his fees. But also, it can be considered a full lease because I ride him whenever I want.

The titles aren't really that important, what is important is what you work out with the owner and then you can basically call it whatever you like. :) Hope that helped.

Yes, sorry I made that kind of confusing. You would still have to pay a fee, for full lease, but ON TOP OF THAT you would pay for board, vet, farrier ect.

And it really depends on what you and the horses owner decide upon, because every lease can be a little different.
