Even if you don't want to take riding lessons, I would at least ask somebody at your barn (assuming you board) to watch you ride and give you tips. I just stopped taking lessons almost a year ago, but I still listen when somebody tells me how to improve my riding. Every rider at every level can benefit from lessons.

Thanks everyone for your opinions. I have found a friend who has ridden horses all of her life and is going to help me out some :) I have also found a woman near by who gives lessons. For now i'm going to let the friend help me out, but I might end up taking a lesson or 2 in the future :)

I take lessons. I think taking lessons will help you know how to not hold on to horses mouth wrong or catch him in the mouth. Its easier and its helpful. You can always ride on your own after a few years without lessons but for me I think id always take lessons one way Id be able to teach lessons someday on my own.
But to do that I need to take lessons for myself ;)

Folks, I have to disagree to some extend. If it's just trail riding mostly at the walk, and you are naturally gentle and have enough experience to hold balance in western saddle, lessons are not THAT important. They are still very BENEFICIAL - no arguing on that, but they are not A MUST.

I know number of people who got nice quiet trained horses, they can WTC without falling off and keep reins loose 100% time. All they do is 3-5 times/week saddle up the horse and go on 1-2 hour trail ride (mostly walk). Why would you need lessons for that?
