My mum bought me a small book when I was around 5-7 years old called "The Little Book Of Horses & Ponies."
It says on the back "An engaging collection of verse, anecdotes and quotations to celebrate the splendours of horses and ponies. Complemented by beautiful paintings, illustrations and memorabilia, it's a tribute to the equine world - and the perfect gift for horse lovers of all ages."

At the time I had no idea what it was about but now I understand. I simply love reading through this little book. Here are some random verses.

I will not change my horse with any that treads...
When I bestride him, I soar, I am a hawk.
He trots the air; the earth sings when he touches it.
The basest horn of his hoof is more musical than the pipe of Hermes...

another:

I had a little pony,
His name was Dapple Grey;
I lent him to a lady
To ride a mile away.
She whipped him, she slashed him,
She rode him through the mire;
I would not lend my pony now,
For all the lady's hire.

another:

Shoe a little horse,
Shoe a little mare,
But let the little colt
Go bare, bare, bare.

another:

People on horses look better than they are;
People in cars look worse.

Another(last I'll put tonight):

Set a begger on horseback,
and he'll ride to the devil.
