mare in heat/questions

Didnt really know where to put this.......
We just bought a mare today and apparently she's in heat. Our geldings wouldnt leave her alone. They all settled in but it was a site.
My question is how long is a heat cycle and how often?I'd really like to seperate her form the boys from now on.Thanks

It's not unusual for a mare to come into heat within a day or so of being in a new barn with geldings or even another mare who may be in heat. It lasts a few days and happens every 28 to 30 days. I simply ignore it and they eventually settle in - she'll let them know if they get too close.
