Mares Or Geldings?????

Ok so i've had geldings and mares before but I like geldings way better than mares it think mares are sweeet but can be a pain of course with me cause we have a stallion at our barn and the mares are always worse when they go into heat so I just wanted to know which one you liked better mares or geldings? Oh yah and gelding are sweet but I know some geldings that think they are still stallions and will try to breed the mares so obvisly that's a pain too rofl xD

Ah, the age old debate LOL. I personally prefer geldings just because they tend to be a bit more mellow than mares (there are exceptions of course) and I am pig headed enough without having to fight with a pig-headed horse. Not only that, but if you are riding a mare among a bunch of other people, you never know when someone is riding a stud they can't control and that puts you in danger. That's one reason why I am not a huge fan of mares for kid horses, just because everyone else is stupid .

I personally think your average gelding is much better than your average mare, and you are much more likely to get a good gelding but if you do get a good mare she'll be wonderful and better than most geldings. Though good mares are rare, so many people think they have one but in reality their horse is a dominant, moody "cow" (sorry - just my opinion).

So I like mares a fair bit but I am very cautious about getting one.

That's all we have are mares and not one of them acts moody or bad. I love mares. Had one gelding and they are good too.

I haven't had a gelding since I was 12. Its been mares all the way since then. I notice a little moody mare once a month but its never been enough to put me off.

This topic was discussed may be 10 times since I joined. May be even more.

For me mares all the way. Yes, they are marish, stubborn at times, like to put their foot on, but they have SO MUCH personality I've never seen in geldings. Plus they like to show off, especially when they try to impress.

Personally, I prefer mares. Yes they can be moody but I've met plenty of geldings that were just as bad if not worse. & the problem with geldings is that if they're moody or misserable, it's not just once a month.
Also, if you're on a ride & there's a mare who's kicking or squealing, 9 times out of 10 it's because the gelding is trying to shove his nose up her butt or getting in her space & it's the rider's job to make sure this doesn't happen.
A mare in heat is no more trouble to handle than a stallion or say a gelding who is highstrung. It's all a matter of keeping their focus. At our gymkhana group there is a fairly even mixture of mares & geldings & there is never any trouble.
I remember last summer I was up camping in the mountains with my friends & the horses & my Arab was the only mare there out of 7 other horses. She was in full heat at the time & it was my friend's sister's 5-yr-old gelding who was squealing & trying to kick every horse in sight.

I am an equal opportunity owner. I have one of each!
pssst, they are both wonderful, though I do prefer cleaning udders to sheath.

I much prefer a gelding to a mare. I like the tempermant of a gelding. I hate the moodiness of a mare. And no not all of them are moody. I have one mare, and whether she is in season or not... she works just the same. But she knows when its work time. But I really love the geldings personalites much more.
