Help!!! - Since I have owned this horse he has always been able to get out of anything. By means of biting snaps or breaking through chain gait ties, untying rope and knots of any kind. Jumping over an electric fence or crawling under.
He can get out of 99% of any stall door on a hinge or track. It took him 20 minutes but the barn manager witnessed him open a truck tail gate where a load of grain was.
I have 4 locks and two chains on his stall door, he once cleared my stall door, then we switched his stall to the higher door. If there is nothing to eat in the pasture he will be in the field next door and no break in the 4 live wires.
My pasture generates 9,200 Vs of electricity.
I woke up this morning to my horse in the isle and the barn torn upside down! Ate everything in sight. My grain garbage can was IN his stall, upright and empty, door was chained & still LOCKED!! HES FAT and been on a diet and well i guess extremely upset i see, he hasn't done this in months.
I have run out of ideas to keep him locked in... I need idea's Im so far beyond confused and just stressed.
LOL sounds like this guy is a Houdini! Fortunatly I have never had that problem other than when my now 3 1/2yr. was a few days old he would be out in the yard because he could slip through the gates, then he would walk under the electric fence......I just had to turn it on one day and now he respects it......good luck and let us know if you can stop him!
Hot wire?? My gelding used to be so bad about pushing on the fences, until he cut himself up or got out. We ran a single strand of hotwire around the entire pasture and after a couple weeks it can be turned completely off but you can bet he will NOT push on that fence anymore!
I can't answer all your issues, but can solve being tied, which cut down on my horse setting himself free. When tied, tie the loose end back to the halter then even if the safety knot is untied, not going anywheres. Can't reach it there mine got so bad hell untie the other horses then sit back and watch. Kind of a game to him. He gets a smug look like "what, it was that one" hehehe. Posted via Mobile Device
... He does the same thing, unties the whole bunch, lets them out of stalls and leads the gang to the alfalfa fields...
Great idea with tying the lead back up and around. I worked for a barn that did that while trailering, They would do a figure eight back to the bottom snap so they could never get it unsnapped or tied.
Thats one problem nipped in the butt.. omg i hope!! lol
... We have 4 live wires around a 10 acre pasture. The electric box is a 100 mile span. The lines pulse 9,200 volts of electricity. I even have an electric line above the gate so he cant jump it anymore.
Before I owned him he got badly injured ripping down 4 acres of barb wire fencing. Leaving wounds around his back legs, scars and a lop off his ear.
I almost want to hobble him but it wont stop him unlocking things, just sow him down lol.
We made special gate latches. My one horse Buddy, deceased, could get out of headstalls, halters, no matter how tied or looped them, opened tack sheds, let horses out, took halters off horses while camping at the beach, open gates, open doors, turn on water faucets, I found him once in my kitchen with the fridge door open trying to get the carrots. So now we have a term about gates and latches we call them Buddy proof.
Goodness. He is still getting out of the fence with all of that hot wire?? You have ALOT more than we do and one small strand stopped my knot head....
All I can think about now is a bicycle lock. The kind you wrap around the bike then the pole. Secure the stall door closed with it, leave the key or the combination on the stall door in case someone needs to get him out.
I have tried a handful of toys., most end up in the isle.
Even hanging salts or the apple hanging thing with the refill round thing LOL.. ugh, whatever those are!
Although, I have used empty paper style grain bags and put some treats & oats in them. Crumpled it up and tossed the bag in his stall for him to tear up for fun. Its only paper and harmless.
I will try a knotted rope. I think I have some very super duty rope. its almost 3 inches wide. ^.^ Tie some toys off to it. Treat him like a huge parrot.
My old gelding use to do this when he was young - but not nearly to the same degree. He wasn't stalled, but he would open gates to whichever pasture he was in, I'd tie them shut w lead ropes and he'd, too, untie the knots. He only "busted out" at random times...not ever day....thank goodness! Untieing rope knots blew me away..the ropes would be soggy goo. I then used locks w the key left in them on the gate latches, and bungy (sp) cords you tarp hay with (the black rubber stretchy ones w S hooks at each end) wrapped tight to hold the gate closed. I originally used the hay bungy cord b/c I lost a key to a lock. I figured he might chew through it, but he never did.
I've had some pretty good escape horses but, yours surely must set the record.
He is extremely intelligent, therefore extremely bored. You're in a boarding situation so your time to spend with him is at a premium.
I'm not even sure it would help to keep his mind busy but you may have to think way outside the box with this guy before he learns how to strike a match and burns the barn down:shock::shock:
Is that him in your avatar? If so, he is absolutely gorgeous - being gorgeous doesn't help to stay mad at him:lol:
Anyway, instead of doing the normal and boring things every time you go to the barn, I would try teaching him some tricks - just nothing that involves escape or letting everyone else out.
It just seems that his mind is twirling faster than he can keep up with and he needs some real challenges in his life.
I'll bet your Fella could make it thru that book at warp speed - that or he won't learn a thing simple because he doesn't want to:lol:
I'm not going to promise I can find it BUT, I do have that book "somewhere" in the attic. I would be thrilled to send it to you for the cost of postage. IF I can find it, since Mr. WTW has a knack for moving things around and the little things seem to get lost forever in the Attic Blackhole:lol:
Again, I'm not saying spending more time teaching him to do more challenging things is the answer but Geez-LahWeez, you're going to have to come up with something before your B.O. decides his antics are not too cute anymore:-|
Also, this is really really outside the box but, if you could place it where he couldn't turn the channels himself, I wonder if a TV might help? He needs something to focus on when he's not asleep -- does he even sleep? lollololol
