Trust me, we are both well aware of the consequences of turning out in a halter of any kind. Monty would have reacted the same way in a nylon halter as well. Any unexpected pressure on his halter makes him freak out.

Guys, please don't turn this into a debate on halters.

As for the cockle burrs and trees in the pasture, they will be getting removed this weekend as well as anything else that he could get caught on.

    LOL! I get ya!

Did the vet say how long to heal? Is it in a spot that will heal quickly? Or will him eating keep opening the wound?

Did he have to get antibiotics?

You seem so calm on this thread - man I'd still be wigging out!!!!

This. You're not the first person to turn out in a rope halter, and you won't be the last. The reason I say all this is because some people do think it's ok to turn out in a rope halter, and imo, I do think that it is an unnecessary risk, when there are such better options out there. I hope he recovers well.

The vet said he should heal up just fine. I was REALLY impressed with this vet. We recently had 3 local equine vets join up and open an equine hospital as the nearest one that we HAVE had was clear down at Purdue which is several hours away. I started using this vet when I got Stiffler but this was the first time I've been present for his work. He is a bit pricey and I had debated finding a cheaper vet but after tonight I'm almost positive I will stay with this vet.

He went over the wound VERY thoroughly to make sure that ANY open spot was sutured. Monty is going to be SORE AS HECK for a few days until the swelling and bruising goes down but he said he should heal totally fine. He gave us 4 tubes of antibiotics for him which will last 8 days.

Honestly, right now I am just so TIRED from everything. I was TOTALLY freaking out when I found him. Monty is the biggest poop stirring instigator of the herd so I'm not surprised it was him that was injured.

I just thought of this. I am betting he had his head down to eat or something like that and I am betting someone was walking past and stepped on him. Could have maybe been pushed, nipped at, etc which would have knocked them off balance and they could have caught his nose on accident. That would make sense with the way the cut was and why there was so much more bruising at the tip of his nose. Also could be what broke the cockle burr too!

I have always wondered this, but do they give horses something for pain? I know they do with colic but that must hurt!

Hang in there, I'm sure you are going to be sleeping good tonight!

We had a horse come into the vet with a wound similar to that. He had been laying down and another horse stepped on his nose and face. He broke the bone and was stitched up. Now you can't even tell it was ever injured except for a small bump where there wasn't one before.

Yep! They numb them just like when we get stitches. He numbed him up REALLY good but that bruising around the tip was even more than what the numbing agent could take care of!

Oh and I know I will LOL! I am SOOOO tired LOL!
