Moving /:

This post would belong under too many, so I put it here. Sorry guys(:

So yesterday, my mom told me that when she retires(in two years), that we're moving to Missouri >.>
From what I've heard, it's FLAT, and that the winters are terrible.
My problems there:
I'd get so bored not going on trails, or running up hills, so would my mare. (Anyone want to argue on it being flat?)
My mare hardly gets a winter coat! (I do ,however, have a heavy blanket, liners, etc)

My mare would be alone.
I told my mom that that isn't so great for a horse, and mentioned getting an alpaca, pony, mini, old retired horse. She wasn't so cool with that.

I'd be 18, so of course I could stay here, but rent and insurance for a car, plus board, and food for myself wouldn't work out.

I'm also in a relationship (and yeah I know it could change in two years, but this made me so upset!)
I don't do long distance.

^ just wanted to complain(;

Onto property and barns:

We're going out this summer to look at the land for sale out there.
They all have barns already there
What should I look for?
I don't want a barn with electric, or a hay loft. That's how our neighbor's barn burned.

What about fencing? I'd LOVE a wooden fence with a hot wire on the top.
Is that the best/safest?

Obviously this is all far away from now, but I really want to figure out what to do.
I'm just not so sure that I want to leave everything that I have now.

Oh how I miss MO... What part are you planning on moving to? I highly recommend looking in the Springfield Area. LOVE that city.

It depends on where in MO you all are looking. The northern areas tend to be flatter. Hannibal isn't bad at all and all kinds of woods to ride in. We're in mid-MO along the MO river and we don't have a flat spot anywhere on our farm, unless we made it ourselves.

Missouri has a lot of places to ride. Parts of the Katy Trail are open to horses as well as several state parks that are geared to equestrians.

I don't know how you ride, but you seem to see a lot more Western here than English, but there are places.

Because the land in the hills where we are is crap, we fenced with t posts, electric and woven wire; just easier to follow the lay of the land.

As for the winters being terrible, once again it depends on where you are. Yeah, we can get a 12 inch snow, but it hardly stays for more than a few days. The further south you go the more freezing rain and ice it seems.

Our horses are out year round, they can come and go as they please to the barn, but they seem to prefer being out.

The humidity can be high, but you just learn to ride early or later in the evenings when it's real hot or you cool off in a pond.

We've had numerous people go really really out of their way to help out when needed. A couple of years ago when hay was short an old farmer a few miles from us showed up with round bales of grass hay and just dropped them for the horses. Wouldn't take a dime for it, found out later that he had made similiar deliveries around our area just because he had some extra.

MO isn't the ass end of the world if you don't make it out to be that way. Lots of horse folk around here.

You board now and are moving onto your own land? That IS awesome (if I read that right)

But yes moving can be tough. I wish you the best on your adventure though!! Maybe things will change a little when the time comes, who knows :)

I'm just going to miss the weekends with my barn girls and all the barn sleep overs and camps.

We happen to love Missouri and have lived here for seven years. The winters don't seem to bad to us but we moved here from Alaska. We live just south of Springfield and it is almost all rolling hills, rivers and lakes. It is beautiful here. There are a lot of horse lovers here.

You might also let your Mom know that if she keeps other farm animals aside from a horse the taxes are less. Horses are a luxury and are taxed as such. Throw in a goat and some chickens and you qualify for agriculture tax rates.
