So I am getting a beautiful mare, she's 19 years old which is perfect for me and my family. She's a dapple grey. The person I am buying her from lives near me, and since I felt that I would forever feel like it was "her" horse, I've decided to rename her myself to make her more "mine". Problem is, I have too many names and I can't narrow it down! Hoping you guys can help me out?! Here are my choices so far...

Luna (for Moon)
Odette (Odie for short?) (Odette was the name of the swan princess in the ballet Swan Lake)
Bailey
Lady
Maisy
Antigone (Greek goddess)
Epona
Ellie
Lola
Chanel

she probably knows her name, so personally I would leave it. call her name, and if she responds keep it .
It would be like changing your husbands name or boyfriends name because his old girlfriend called him that name.. lol..
If you call her name and she has no response to it, then change it.
Just my humble opinion

She doesn't know her name at all. I've also read a ton up on names and horses and from what I've read, they can have a different name every day and it wouldn't much matter to them - not like dogs or cats. I think they're like babies.... for example, I could say to my 1 year old daughter "I'm going to burn the house down!" but if I say it in a cutesy higher pitched voice she will smile just like I said "I love you" (not a very pleasant example, but it'll do lol).

I personally don't have a problem changing the name as I know she doesn't even respond to it. The current owner changed it 6 years ago herself also.
