Naming my new horse?!?!?!?

Hey!!!! Sooooo it might be too early for this but.... we are boarding a horse at the barn for a few weeks to see if I like him (2 weeks in and totally in looove:) so we can buy him. I would like some help with a name...right now it is Rowdy and it just does not fit him at all so I will set up a poll (maybe...if I can figure it out) so you can vote for his name!!! And since I have no idea how to post pics I will just describe him:

-16.2 hh
-super skinny
-fuzzy
-brown and white paint with a black tail and forlock as well as several black patches on his white brown and black mane
-indian pony-looking
-boy

So what do you think????? Apache or Amore?

Well, Amore sounds more like a girls name,so of the 2 names Apache sounds better for a boy-(hope it's a gelding), but Patches is easier to say-just a thought.

Cacowgirl, I love the name Patches! But between the two you have I would say Apache. Good luck with your new boy!

Name

No matter how bad or unfitting a horses name is, you shouldn't really change it. There's a legend that changing a horses name is badluck. I believe due to my friends new horse. She changed her horses name then the same week the horse became lame and she managed to fall off.

But I guess you can change the name. The horse may wonder who you're talking to though as the horse would be pretty familiar with it's current name.

I have heard that superstition as well. I bought a gelding a few years ago, and the seller heard me talking about wanting to change his barn name and she freaked out. She made me promise I wouldn't change the name. I almost had a feeling she wouldn't sell me the horse if I didn't promise not to change it (guess she really believed it was bad luck). Anyway, I've had many horses, probably changed the name of half of them, but never had any issues.

As for responding to the name, I have always found they resonded to pretty much any name once they knew me and recognized my voice.

I agree Amore sounds girlie, and the whole changing names is bad luck is a myth. Horses may recognize a name after many years of being called it but like aqharyder said, your horse recognizes your voice! I have had many project horses who had just horrible names and I changed them the minute I got them, within days they would here me calling and come. Never had "bad luck" bc of it.

Also my first horse, I bought for pennies from a field and her name was Liz, I changed it to Chloe and after three wonderful years, (perfect show horse and never took a lame step) I sold her to a wonderful family for a large sum of money...

Best of luck with your new addition, I agree with your name change, you should love the name of your horse not hate saying it :-p
