We got a welsh that I knew for a fact had been "trained" in a horrific manner. He was just 3 and his first response was to fight the handler. I began giving him a little grain twice daily and he soon began to look forward to my coming and gradually handling him. His training was restarted correctly and when he learned he wouldn't get hit we progressed rapidly. He was quite used to the saddle so my older son started riding him under my tutelage. We discovered the pony loved to buck, head between his knees and yahoo. Most of our riding was on trails and my older son learned to sit the bucking until the pony got tired of it. He promptly tossed the younger son so I fashioned a check rein that prevented him from turning into a bronc. We never did fix the bucking.
