New horse in the barn? (Strange)

(Sorry about the length)

So I just finished lungeing my mare and was back at the barn when I saw something odd. Sunshine's pasture mate HammerHead was in the huge walk in stall that the share but on the outside of the stall was a huge horse that was fighting with him. Well I let Sunshine into the pasture and I finally managed to get Hammer Head out of the stall into the pasture. I closed and locked the door so that they wouldn't interfear.

I opened the inside door to the stall and went outside to figure out what was going on. My unce(who is a trainer) keeps his horses in a barn near by, but I knew for a fact he didn't have a horse this big. Im not sure but I think he was a Percheron draft horse. I went out and petted him to get him calmed down so he wouldn't hurt himself then I tried to think of a way to get him out. He had somehow got himself wedged between the hay baler and a apple crate, and his tail was wrapped around and stuck on some levers. Everytime he tried to walk forward it would pull on his tail and he would freak out. Plus ther was 3 trashbags blocking his way out.

So I went back and got the biggest halter I could find and put it on him to give me a little bit more control. After all his shoulders were taller than I was. I backed him up so he wasn't puling on his tail and tied him to the hay baler so that if he tried to walk foreward it would pull on his halter before his tail. About that time my little brother came out and wanted to help. Me and my little brother were home alone at the time so I sent him to get help. I got him calmed and slowly got to his tail and tried to get his tail off the lever with my fingers. It was so wrapped around that I couldn't do anything. Well then my brother returned and none of our neighbors were home to help. I told him to grab me a pair of sizors and to go try to call some people.

I managed to cut part of his tail and unhook it from the leavers when my little brother came back again. He said that my aunt was going to try to get some1 to come help us, but she was 2 hours away. By this time the horse is starting to get really ansy and is pawing at the ground. I held him while my little brother went around and tried to move the trash bags. They were to heavy for him and he wouldn't stay with him so I couldn't move it. Luckily I still had him tied and he didn't try to hard. Then my uncle who lives about 20 minutes away showed up to help but he was in a hurry. He moved the trashbags and managed to get him backed out of his predicament. It only took him about an hour. So now I had this huge horse and didn't know what to do with it. My uncle had to leave so he wasn't any help in that department.

What I ended up doing is taking him down to my uncles round pen for the night. Well when they got back from there rodeo this morning they had no idea whose horse it is, so now Im stuck with a unknown horse. I was wondering if you guys could tell if I handled the situation the right way. I couldn't just leave him there and all my family members but my little brother were hours away. Is there anything I could of done better? What should I do about the horse?(He is a stallion). Has any one else had something like this happen? Thanks guys if you read all the way through it.

^^I think you handled it pretty well, glad that you or the horse wasn't hurt! Maybe you could post a 'found horse' sign on craigslist or put up posters or something... I'm sure the owners miss him dearly. Never happened to me because I live in the city but I've found many lost dogs...haha :p Maybe you could talk to your vet and see if he knows anything about the horse. Maybe he could ask all his other clients about if they've seen the horse. Is there a brand or anything like that (do they even brand horses? Haha that was probably really lame what I just said :p)? Hope this helps ;)

Since he is the size of a house and is a stud, chances are he mowed down his fence and went off on his merry way. His owners are probably looking for him.

Call your local police department. Our new guy got out the other day and I was frantic. Turns out he's a darn good jumper. (Hooray) The first thing I did was call the police department. Luckily someone had found him, put them in their field and had called as well. So I got their number and called them, went and picked him up. If you can't get someone at the police department put up signs and post online where you can.

We finally found the owner this morning^_^ He was so happy to find his horse. He had been missing for about two weeks and came from another state.(I live on the state line). I called my vet and they managed to locate them after many phone calls and emails. Apparetly they hired someone to work on there house and they broke the fence and didn't tell anyone.

The owner is going to come by and get him this afternoon when he can get a horse trailor big enough to haul him back. Im actually sad to see him go, but I am glad he has a home were someone loves him. His name is Gunner apparently and he really is a sweet horse.
