No fill rug in summer?

My horse is grey and always comes in covered with mud! It takes me so long to get him mud free again, my friend suggested buying a no - fill turnout rug to keep on him in summer, mainly to keep him clean! I'm a bit hesitant as he doesn't get cold easily and I'm worried he could still over heat. Any suggestions?

I don't know what the weather is where you are at, but even when its raining here in summer, my horses will sweat with a no-fill blanket. Go for a fly sheet, some of them are ridged to help keep horses cleaner in summer, and they won't overheat your horse.

Grooming your horse is a bonding activity. Why don't you just take your time and groom him for a bit longer, instead of rugging him? If the weather is warm he really doesn't need that rug and for some horses it is uncomfortable to roll, to scratch, to be groomed by other horses, if they are rugged. To my mind, in too many cases rugs give comfort to humans - but the comfort of horses should go first. :)

(And, no, I am not a hyper anti-rug person. I have a fly sheet for riding (we have LOTS of bugs here) and a fleece rug for walking off in cold weather, but I just don't believe in using rugs if there isn't a medical condition.)

thanks, i agree with you... it's more just a time saving idea. However, i love bonding with him as much as riding so I've pretty much answered my own question! :)
