My Great Grandfather and Grandfather ran a 30,000 acre cattle ranch and they had a mix. Their cow horses were whatever worked and their riding horses were walkers.

Now I don't know much about gaited breeds outside of walkers but I have tried to round up cows on them. Lets just say most walkers are to fast for cows to use them full time. It was take two steps and wait, take two more steps then wait some more. As much as I love the ride of a walker for doing cows full time I would want a horse that walked at the same speed as a cow.

Haha I was going to suggest that site to lol :)

Just remember alot had to do with the jobs the person did. Ie. Farmers, bankers, outlaws, sheriffs, general stores, stage coachs, military, etc...

Most old time cowboys had no more control over the horses they rode than the modern office worker has over the color of thier cubicle walls. They rode the string they were given and that string was probably made up of whatever the owner or foreman could get pretty cheap or whatever they raised on the ranch. They probably had some good ones and some bad ones and a bunch in the middle.
