How do you moms out there do it. I have a friend thats pregnant and doesnt want to sell her horse but doesnt know what to do. Can you still ride when pregnant? I told her she can lease him out. Posted via Mobile Device
I did ride while pregnant, but that is an individual choice that should be made with your doctor. I'm fortunate that my OB also is a horse owner I didn't ride any greenies and I quit when I felt too off balance to mount from the ground, about 7 months.
The biggest change is after the baby comes! Finding time or energy to ride is a rarity. I took several months off afterwards. I had a good friend keep my broke horses in shape, my youngsters just went on the backburner for awhile. No complaints from them, they were fat & happy.
It really depends on the situation, how trained the horse is, how trained she is, what discipline she wants to ride, etc.
My mom rode throughout both of her pregnancies, on very well-trained horses and cautiously. She actually did take a small spill when she was about 6 months pregnant with my brother and was fine, but it gave us all a bit of a scare.
On the other hand, I have a good friend who did not ride during her pregnancy because she was high-risk anyway and didn't want to take the chance of anything happening.
I'm just shy of 36 weeks and still riding my paint stallion at least once a week. My last pregnancy I rode until my due date as well. Posted via Mobile Device
I was riding and training when I became pregnant with my youngest daughter, now 23yo, so my dr. said be careful, but don't stop if you don't want to. By my 8th month I was riding ONLY my safest most reliable horse. I wish I had a video of my mounting...like that! ROFL
My 23yo DD is such a joy that I am glad that I was careful. (Pretty proud of her, Magna Cum Laude at the University of Illinois WHILE working 25 hours/week--her undergraduate is almost paid for--and she is in her first semester at Southern Illinois University's Law School.)
If your friend has been riding regularly, like 3-5 days/week, and her horse is reliable, she should continue to ride. A good babysitter horse isn't gonna forget training if not ridden for 3 or even 6 months.
If she rides infrequently I would recommend that she stop riding and maybe she should lease her horse out, if the costs become a problem. 6-9 months is a small inconvenience, in the scheme of things, and if you harm your child you'll have to live with that.
After my daughter was born I didn't ride again until she was 6-8 weeks old, but you have to heal, or your OWN body can be compromised.
If she's worried about her horse turning into a spoiled pasture ornament while she's pregnant, and she doesn't feel comfortable riding herself, than I'd lean towards leasing/ having a friend ride him in her stead. I can't imagine not having horses, even though I'm 23 weeks and this is my first one. I almost got another horse a few weeks back, but then I remembered there's a baby coming in March and I know I won't have time for three of them.
