I was a Coastie for 24 years :). Best thing to do is get a listing of the barns in the area, if there isn't a base nearby that has boarding. If you want to transport your horse as you move, then my suggestion would be to go to the area ahead of time to check locations. Obviously you could always move once you get there but I found it was less stressful to have the barn chosen.
If you have your own trailer you are pretty much good to go but another recommendation is that if you get a cross country run, hire a professional hauler. It is less stressful on the horse in the long run to ride in a cushy van than to be hauled 3000 miles in a 2 or 4 horse trailer.
When your husband gets his sponsor, if you haven't gotten a list online of barns in the area, have the sponser get the information. I still have a contact in Virginia and I am in Maryland so could help there.
