Pissy Mare Syndrome?

(Haven't posted here in a while ><)

So on Sunday I went down to have a ride.
However Bella is in season at the moment and when that happens she tends to get very pissy. However it's never been as bad as it was that day.

She kept squealing, putting her ears back etc and when I got on her, it's hard to explain what she did but she would walk forward a few steps then stop, step back a bit, go to the side and not stand still. This continued and she kicked out at me when I used my leg and so I got off and put her back in her paddock, feeling very frustrated because she's never like that.

And she can generally be a pissy mare even when she's not in season. I've had her for 2 years and she has never been as bad as she was today.

Any tips for dealing with pissy mares?

So I'm not the only one who has this problem! My mare Misty does this almost everytime I try to ride when she's in season. I have found that when she is being really pissy and grouchy it does her a lot of good to do loungeing for respect like Clinton Anderson's method teaches. It makes her pay attention to me and she is still pissy but not so bad that she won't listen. Hopefully it might help you with your mare.

You could try Mare Magic. Haven't tried it myself but I have heard great things. Also, there is a Rugamate shot you can get. It is similar to a birth control given to humans, that your vet administers every 3 months, I believe. Again, haven't tried it but heard great things. My mare doesn't get pissy, but she will jump fences to tease the geldings two pastures over.

I have had loads of mares and haven't let ANY of them get pissy...if they want to get pissy they get to work and work hard. If they want to kick up or out they get their butts laced with my over and under. They also get the over and under if they want to shake their head, pin their ears, squeal, ect. They quickly learn that being pissy does not fly with me and never will. If they think the work they have been doing everyday and hasn't changed is hard I will make them rethink that thought.

Had a lesson last night, she isn't in season any more and she was as good as gold!
I think I might have to look at getting some Mare magic for the occasions when she does get pissy at me though.

My daughters Mare gets "pissy" and we have her on mare magic. It does help... BUT when you got off her and put her away you did just what she wanted you too.. so now she knows when she does not feel like "working" she can be pissy and you will get off... what you should have done was worked her . Make her work trot her in a circle. Make her Think of something else.. and make the when she is grumpy make the wrong thing hard then try to walk out again and if she is better than makeit easy..
I know I am not explaining this as well as others but I think you get what I mean..
If she is really bad pissy you could do some ground work or lunging her and getting her to focus on you...
I hope this helps

It helps Grace
