Where I live, in N. Central Florida, you will see a lot of men out on the trails, I would guess at least 25% men, 75% women, maybe even 35% men, 65% women. At the field trials where the men work dogs, it is at least 90% men, and 10% women. For at least 3 years I rode with a group of trail riders who were all men and I was the only woman. But this is unusual, I believe. Other trail riding clubs have a majority of women, though there are always at least 25% or 35% men.

When I lived in Maryland, it was 10% men and 90% women who rode in horseshows. My foxhunting club was probably 35% men and 65% women.

Men and women gravitate to different segments of the sport.

Men are more represented and often dominate in anything which uses horses but also has big adventure, cows, weapons, high speed, big danger, high stakes, or real money.

Women dominate everything else.

Big exception is barrel racing which is pretty much the girl rodeo sport.

We have exactly one little boy at our yard, out of 50 odd girls and women in riding school and boarding. I have a theory that riding is a sport in which you cannot compete for at least a few years whereas if you get a ball, you can get a competition of some sort going within minutes, no experience necessary. But then that does not explain other sports in which men do partake, like skiing which takes a lot of time to get proficient in.

A lot of girls seem to go through a horse-crazy stage, which doesn't show up as often in boys. But looking back at my own kids, I feel bad that I didn't encourage my son more, because as an adult he seems more interested in the horses than my daughter. My wife has no interest in the horses.

Hmm. I was going to say it's mostly women out here too. For instance, out of a trail ride of maybe 10 women, there may only be one or two guys.

But then I thought about roping (which I don't participate in). I know there are a lot of ropers here and even my vet was a roper before he passed away. So I do think it's discipline specific. If you went to a roping, you would probably think there were not very many women who rode horses. If you went on a trail ride, you would probably there there weren't very many men.

I didn't read all the responses so I'm not sure if any others say the same thing.. but I think that there are far more women riders that compete. And when most people think of horse competitions, they think of dressage and jumping which women really dominate. In the western world there are a lot more men although women compete a lot too. Where I live there are a lot more men with horses. I think that's due to the fact that there are a lot of farmers and homesteaders where I am and they use their horses for work.
