Talking Please tell me stuff you hate about horse books!

I'm a big horse lover, but I've never owned or done any regular (as in every week) horseback riding. I am also a writer. And now I'm working on a historical novel, where the main character's dream is to own a horse farm(so he is supposed to know a lot about horses). During the story he, a woman and a ten year old child travel on horseback for about three weeks. But enough about the story, this is about the horses!

Even me, who I guess compared to most people here is a beginner in both riding and horse care, I've notice how books sometimes get it wrong. And I know next to nothing. What I do know is that horses either walk or troth if you are on a longer journey, they don't gallop all day. I know horses tend to puff up so you have to tighten the saddle just before getting up to make sure you don't fall and they drink a lot of water. But other stuff about horse care I know very little about.

Heck, I barely know if horses eat hay or lay down in it? Do horses need to lay down to sleep? I know they can snooze standing up but do they need to lay down some times? Do they get sick from too many carrots or could they live on carrots if they wanted? Could you leave their bits in if you stop for the night but will have to get going quickly in the morning? Can a carriage horse be saddled and ridden without any ill effect? How often do they need new shoes? All these things I'm kind of clueless about so...

On to what I want help with!

I would love it if everyone here could tell me everything you've noticed in any and all books with horse you have read in the past! Tell me the most awful things books got wrong so I don't do the same!

And/or anything you think would be important in my scenario (three riders, three horses on a journey for three weeks in a historical setting. What could go wrong/be trouble for the horses?) would be much
appreciated as well!

I know your thinking; what do I get out of this? The sad truth; nothing but some karma points. But your information would help me tremendously and hopefully, if I ever did get the book published, there will be one less book that got all the facts about horses wrong! That's got to count for something right?

Thanks for taking the time to help out!

If there was only one way to go about life, everything would be so much easier. And a lot more boring!

Good luck with your book. If you don't actually get a book contract, you can publish it as an indie writer through Kindle. I have a couple of books with them. I don't think that I am going to get rich from them, but I have sold a few.

The main thing that goes wrong with horse books is that the people who write them have never seen a horse, touched a horse, or ridden a horse in person, ever. If you want to write about horses, ride. Clean stalls. Groom them. Work with an expert. Take lessons.

I would also go into the trail riding section of this forum and read all the posts on all the thread. You will pick up a lot of information.

Oh, to answer some of your questions:
1. horses can sleep standing up
2. you do have to take the bit out at night no matter what
3. carriage horses usually can be ridden
4. horses need new shoes about every 6 weeks

Carpe Diem!
