So where i board as there is 3 neighboring fields on one side that used to belong to my BOs. They sold it off before I came there. About a month ago this little grey horse showed up down there. These fields are close to the road and i wonder if someone just threw her out. I have no idea who owns these fields or I would go ask them if she's theirs. Funny thing is theres no gates on the areas to get out of the top two fields so if someone was keeping her there wouldnt they put gates up? I see her standing at the bottom on the field like she's trying to get close to my horses and the others in the field. Today I was down in the field giving out some baby carrots to my boys and she was there so i offered her a couple and she was the sweetest little thing. She let me rub her head and nose. Thats also how I know its a she I checked lol I wish I knew if she had owners. Shes obviously been around humans before or she wouldnt have let me touch her. I just feel bad cause shes so sweet but she's so skinny. I know theres probably not anything I can do for her but it still bothers me. Heres some pics. Also I think she might have something wrong with her shoulder cause theres such a knot there.
Any water source? If not that's one of the best reasons to call the authorities. Have you circled the property for evidence of someone leaving water? Be careful about giving her treats as you could get into trouble for that.
Theres a creek but i dont think she can get too it. And I didnt see any buckets or things around when I looked around the fields. As far as i know from riding in the those fields ,back when ex trainers daughter rode with me, theres only two ways out of those fields. And I can see both entrances from my horses field. I would have noticed if a bucket had been placed there, but i could be wrong since its been awhile since i've been in them there might be another way in and i know i just gave her like 2 little baby carrots cause was just staring at me like 'please give me one too' lol
Agree with what has been said-you can see the knot on her shoulder.....does her knee look huge to anyone else or is it just the angle? She is a cute girl.....Hope you can figure it out, OP.
woo, for a moment I was like "I know that horse!" But the one I know that looks like that is a gelding, and has a huge white mark on his left upper leg. Scared me for a moment though.
Yeah her shoulder and knee are my biggest reasonings that shes been thrown out. Heres another pic where you can really see her the knot on her shoulder. Do you guys think my mom and I should ask around the neighbors (theres only 2 maybe 3 close to these fields) or just go straight to the authorities?
When you find out Shaggy, can you let us know what you find out? She is a very pretty girl, love her ears! Looking at her shoulder, if it isn't a soft tissue injury, could it be what is called a sweeney shoulder?
Glad you found her, if it were me, I would of put a small trough or something she could get water out of, she needs some groceries for sure but hopefully you will find something out. Have you called the local animal control or vet offices that deal with large animals? Sheriff's office? Ask if anyone has lost a young grey mare.
Sure I'll defiantly keep guys updated! I know arent her ears the cutest! Sweeny Shoulder sounds interesting dont know if thats it or not. You read my mind about the trough. Would I get in trouble for that?
If your BOs sold the property, they would know who they sold it to - one way to find out! And yes, meantime, I wouldn't hesitate to call animal control, and continue calling with your concern every day until they make it out...stay on top of it, and be her voice
Yeah true! I just dont know if the same ppl that they sold it too still own it, but i'll defiantly ask them! Im hoping my mom and I can call animal control soon but we wanna talk to the BOs before we do. I want to be her voice! She's too sweet and pretty to sit in that field and waste away.
Excellent point! Just had a thought, however....what if you placed a trough/water bucket on your side, but ever so conveniently accessible for her to reach and drink? The very best of luck with this, and Godspeed - she looks like she needs proper care yesterday.
If you can take a bucket of water to her and just watch her (not leaving it in there) you will have an idea if she is getting water elsewhere. If she is super thirsty and drinks it up quickly she may not have water elsewhere, which means the authorities need to be contacted ASAP, as dehydration can kill animals quickly. However, if you offer it to her and she seems uninterested or only takes a sip or two then most likely she has access to water elsewhere, and not quite as urgent for a response from authorities, even though she is thin too.
Poor thing!
I would definitely try to find out who owns the land and ask if they recently acquired a horse. If not, it would be time to get the authorities involved. Keep us updated, she is a cutie pie!
poor dear! she looks so sweet and kind! definitely get her some water, looks like she has grass to eat, which is good but a flake or two of hay couldn't hurt if you can spare it.
Im gonna take some water down tomorrow. Yeah shes got grass the field shes in isnt in bad shape. but i wonder about her teeth. I didnt think about it at the time but she did have trouble with the carrots but i just figured maybe she never eatin on before. maybe thats why with all that grass she isnt gaining any weight.
Hope she gets some good care soon. Haven't the barn owners seen her out there?
I know here in Indiana and down in Kentucky they've had some problems with people turning their horses loose because they couldn't afford them anymore. Sad situation all the way around.
Yes the lady has seen her down there. I was out there riding when she saw her and we talked I just told her i started seeing the little horse down there by the fence. She didn't really act like she knew what to do. *sigh* I love my BOs but some times they just arent the smartest.
Record her drinking on your phone or camera if you can. And put the water on your side of the fence. Can you put up wire to stop her getting out onto the road, while you confirm that she's been abandoned? I'd bet good money she's been dumped as she is lame and never ridable.
Oh good idea so police can see just how thirsty she is if need be. and no I would have to go way up on the other sides of the fields and i dont have any wire or help.
I wouldn't waste time trying to figure out who the owners of the property are. Ask any neighbors you know if they know anything about the horse, and assuming they don't, contact the police. Tell them that this horse just recently showed up, you have reason to believe it's been abandoned there, and that it's in very bad shape. They can easily look up the property's owner and ask them about the horse. Call every day about it until they do.
My guess is that she's been dumped there, knowing there's neighbouring horses and somebody will take care of her. I'd call the animal welfare now - if it was mine, and I was taking the proper care of it, i wouldn't be offednded if someone was concerned and rported it as i'd be able to prove i was following vets edvice etc - and if the owners surface and can't prove they are working to get her well, thn at least you've saved her from anymore suffering xx Posted via Mobile Device
Not as of yet. I've been waiting to talk to my BO before I call the cops or anything. I hate waiting. But I did get a better look at where the field opens at the top by the road. There is a gate but no buckets by it. So I'm still not exactly sure where she's getting water but she's got to be getting it somewhere because for as long as she's been there she would be dead by now if she wasn't.
So Great News she has an owner! long story short we were gonna go ask the neighbors this weekend if she was theres and one of the little boys in my moms first grade class is one of them. So she asked him today and she's theirs. They been taking care of her (as well as another horse) and trying to get her healthy. The only reason they haven't treated the shoulder is they weren't sure how to get a vet. Theres few big animal vets around here so not a big surprise but hopefully I get my vets number to them through my mom. Im just so relived she has an owner! I don't have to worry about her!
Just check up on her. Make sure they know you are always available to help, and if she gets worse don't hesitate to step in. Glad to hear the good news.
If the shoulder knot is hard and 'boney', it is probably an old injury. If it is soft, it is probably Pigeon Fever and will break and drain.
Obviously, this horse has water or it would have died 3 or more weeks ago. If there is pasture and water, it is not being technically 'abused' or 'neglected' under the law. Just ask around if you must. It is just typical of what has happened after cheap horses lost their value. It is probably just another 'unwanted horse'.
oh ok I was just curious. Never had to deal with it thank goodness so I don't much about it. Just what i've read on here.
