Price for 1/2 lease on my mare?

    Hi,

I recently graduated from college, and with not being able to find a job very quickly I have decided to lease out one of my horses to help cover the cost of boarding. What I'm looking to do is a lease where I can ride her at least 2x a week and the leasee could ride 3-4 days a week. Board at her barn is currently $350/month full care, then on top of that would be vaccinations, deworming, and farrier (she's barefoot so that would be about $40/6 weeks). She's very very broke and safe for kids through adults. I've given lessons to all levels on her. She lunges perfectly, knows voice commands, rides English and Western. She has been in dressage work for the past few years at school with me and has scored in the upper 60s at first level, schooling some second level movements. She jumps 2'"3 comfortably and could go higher, although she gets very excited so isn't for a beginner jumper. When I was showing her in 4-H, she competed in barrel racing and dressage and would win in both, she doesn't get hot. She trail rides, bathes, trailers. Good ground manners. She's 13 years old, 15 hands, and registered with AQHA. I have had her since she was 3. She has a ton of show experience and is always in the ribbons. She's fine out to pasture as much as possible, but has no bad stall habits. I'm looking for an on-location lease, but I would also consider moving her to another barn if it was reasonably close.

What do you think is a fair price to ask for this sort of lease?

I'd add up all your normal expenses for a year (board, feed, supplements, farrier, vaccinations, etc.), divide by 12 to get your monthly cost, and then use that as a starting point. Since it sounds like your horse is very much show-ready, you might be able to get away with charging a little more, but higher prices could also mean it would take longer to find a leasee.

I would probably say somewhere around $225/month without adding up all of your expenses. This will have the person leasing paying half of the monthly board, plus an additional $50 for various expenses such as farrier and vaccinations. Add up all of your costs to see what you get, divide by 12, and then divide by half, but that seems fair. Nowadays most people are not willing to pay a fee in addition to what is necessary to care for the horse, so I'd just stick to the basic expenses.
