Problem with a horse rescue

First of all, I have to say....I've been lurking around here for a while just reading and learning. Thanks for all the knowledge!! lol.
I don't have a horse, but was trying to get into volunteering with a rescue and also looking into lessons. I found a rescue, unfortunately, it wasn't what it appeared to be, ended up in a pretty eye-opening experience, and now I need help.
I don't want to get into too much detail because the whole thing ended up in a police report and it's pretty the way, this has nothing to do with the way horses were being treated, in fact, in my time there, I never met a horse.
My question is this....this rescue is a 501c3 rescue, supposed to be reputatable and all that, but it's obviously not. According to the police after my report, there is a lot more to this story... Who can/should I contact to talk about what happened at this rescue? Since they are a member of the Equine Voice Welfare Alliance, I contacted them, but where else is good to go?
Please understand that this is a very serious problem, and I would never do this if I didn't feel it was the right thing to do.
If you are a member of something I can contact, or think you may be albe to help me, please PM me and I will tell you what happened. Because I'm a little afraid that these people may retaliate, please let me know who you are with.
Thank you for all your help, and to anyone looking into volunteering or something similar....PLEASE be careful out there....I found this out the hard way today.

Unfortunately 501c3 rescue status means next to nothing.
Honestly, your post made very little sense to me - are there animals in danger?

I know the post is a little vague, but thank you for your response. To be completely honest, I don't know if the animals are in any danger, as I didn't get to see/meet them, or even get to really look at the area where they were at.

That being said, there were some illegal activities going on there - including drugs, and I fear for any people that are looking to do the right thing and contact them regarding volunteering with these people.

Does this make a little more sense now? I'm sorry I am a little relunctant to give out a lot of information, because with there being a police report made against them, I don't really know what is "ok" for me to say on a public board, ya know? I'd really like to tell you all of it, because I really want the word out.

Just a little of an update: I contacted Equine Voice Welfare Alliance and told them what happened. They e-mailed me back saying that they have received very similar reports of problems, and have since removed the rescue as a member.

Without seeing the condition of the animals you may be limited in what you personally could do. You can check with the police or the Equine Welfare Alliance to see if there is anything they can do to warn potential volunteers to walking into this situation.

You can check with your local aspca but they may not be able to do much without a witness to the condition of the horses. Not sure if they can investigate.

You may have done all you can with getting the police involved and you may want to leave it in their hands. They may be limited as well.

Thanks for replying. I've contacted National Equine Rescue Coalition and they said they are going to send someone out to check on the place and horses and go from there.

I just think it's a crazy thought that someone else looking to volunteer falls into this place and meets the people I met there and are offered the drugs I was. It's NUTS!
