I do it that way because I have better balance getting my left foot in the stirrup when my left side is against the horse. Those with younger legs, longer legs or shorter horses can do whatever works. When possible, I prefer a mounting block for Mia, and she is only 15.2...maybe 15.3 tops.
When people talk about mounting a 17+ hand horse, I have visions of an emergency ladder hanging down from the saddle.
