So I recently found out the first horse I ever worked and trained has come up for sale. This was my first heart horse and I showed and worked with him for 5 years. He is a 13 yo 14.1 reg. Quarter Horse gelding. He was mostly used for Western Pleasure and last year he won 1st place at the Pa state 4h show in Western Pleasure Ponies. I am considering buying him not only for the fact that I miss him like crazy but because I think he would make an excellent beginner lesson horse for my farm. He is priced for me at $1,200. The only problem I have is I really don't need anymore horses. I currently have 7 on my property. I am in the process of selling one and I think come spring we are gonna sell the rescue filly we got. What do you guys think? Should I go ahead and get him or should I wait a bit until I have 2 less horses?
I mean obviously that's a really personal decision, but I think that if he will be of good use to your farm, and your heart, it's worth it. Also that's a steal of a price, is that where your horse market usually is? Dang, he'd be way more expensive where I am.
I couldn't touch that horse for less than $10K around here. So, if you have a use for him I would get him and push a little harder to sell the ones that need to go.
He normally would be more expensive but his owner significantly dropped the price for me due to the fact that I put 5 years worth of training, work, and showing into him.
I'd go get him, so long as you can feed him. He's not going to be for sale forever. And, if he's that good of a lesson horse you shouldn't have trouble finding someone to half lease him to cover part of his costs!
You are planning to cut back on the number of horses and since this horse means so much to you, I would say go ahead and buy him and if you have to, sell one of the other horses to make room for him.
I am assuming that he is sound and able to fit in to your lesson program. If he isn't sound then a big decision whether to buy him and give him a retirement home would have to be made.
